Psystar’s “OpenPro Mac” runs Leopard and costs $2,100 on the high-end

By Jonathan Schlaffer

There’s a lot of news floating around right now about Psystar corporation and it’s army of "clone" Macs.  Psystar has stopped calling their line of computers "OpenMacs" and is now calling them "Open Computers" but are still willing to install a number of operating systems including OSX Leopard.

While you only have a choice of Mac OSX Leopard with the basic "Open Computer" with the "OpenPro Computer" you have several more hardware and operating system choices.

This system gives you a choice of either a black, white or silver mirror case; Intel Core 2 Quad processors up to 2.66GHz; 1TB hard drive storage; GeForce 8800GT graphics; up to 8GB of memory and your choice of operating system including none, Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit, Mac OSX Leopard, Ubuntu 8.04 or even Windows XP Professional.

Apple will probably take exception to them offering Leopard as an option but at least you have other options as well and choosing Ubuntu would make it a truly "Open Computer."

The top end configuration with Leopard will "only" cost $2,169 so you get a fair more bang for your buck than you would from Apple but probably not the reliability or support but I cannot confirm this either way.

There’s also no telling how any of the operating systems will perform out of the box, that depends on the technical prowess of those building, configuring and installing the software which I cannot comment on.

Would be nice if Psystar was a real company. I’ll believe it when I see a real Psystar somewhere.
