Apple offers GeForce 8800GT upgrade for older Mac Pro desktops
Older Mac Pro owners will not (finally) be left out in the cold after all. When Apple decided to release a GeForce 8800GT upgrade kit for the Mac Pro, it was soon discovered that this kit did not work on the older Mac Pros. This has now be rectified and a kit is now available for owners of the “older” Mac Pro.
The previous version of the upgrade kit only worked with the Mac Pros from early 2008 onwards but would not work with any previous Mac Pro due to firmware issues. The new kit is a completely different version and should only be used in the older Mac Pros.
It is currently available for purchase in the Apple Store. Both of the cards have the same exact specs save for the different compatibilities.
“Compatibility:
- Requires Mac Pro (bus speed 1.6GHz) with PCI-Express 2.0
- Includes a DVI to VGA connector for easy connection to VGA-based displays
Note to owners of Mac Pro (early 2008): Please select the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (early 2008) Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro.”
Now owners of the older Mac Pros can have their cake and eat it too. Apple finally delivered on a promise. Now if only it can sort out those iMac display issues and get us something to sit between the Mac Mini and Mac Pro, all will be right with the world. (Aluminum MacBooks are purported to be forthcoming so I left that off the list).
