Rusted 17″ MacBook Pro with Tiger on eBay for $1295

April 20, 2008

Rusted MacBook Pro with Tiger on eBay for $1295You can spend just a little more and can get an older generation 15″ MacBook Pro while they’re still on clearance or spend just as much and get a brand new MacBook.  Or, you can be a fool and buy this thing which looks like it was left to rot in the wilderness for several years while being picked apart by angry wildlife.

The laptop is no longer up for sale and eBay doesn’t say if it sold or not just that “this item has ended.”  I do hope that no one actually bought this laptop because of the condition it was in, it just wasn’t worth it.

Let’s take a look.  The top of the lid is completely rusted and the laptop is what I would describe as in being very bad shape.

In the description,

-This Macbook has some heavy wear and rust on it, mainly on the front lid, it doesn’t make the laptop look great cosmetically on the outside, there isn’t much wear on the inside and the screen still looks glossy (no scratches)
-The laptop has no battery and has been used plugged into the wall with the adapter (battery connectivity has not been checked)
-The laptop has a screen issue on that affects only the very right part of the screen, there are a few light lines cross this part of the screen but they don’t really obstruct view

Wow.  There are plenty of other MacBook Pros on eBay for similar prices that don’t have nearly the same defects as this one.  Let’s continue, it includes some software,

-Microsoft Office 2003
-Quark XPress Passport
-Adobe Programs: (BRIDGE, IMAGEWRITER, INDESIGN, ILLUSTRATOR, PHOTOSHOP, DEVICE CENTRAL, DREAMWEAVER, EXTENSION MANAGER, AND GO LIVE)
-CoffeeCup Software
-Webroot Spy Sweeper

-docXConverter

Well, that’s some nice software but just look at the condition this thing is in.  It’s just not worth it.  There’s even a note at the bottom, “Scammers need not bother.”  No kidding, not even a scammer would want anything to do with this.

But hey, at least you get the wall charger with it; I’m in awe.  At some point the system color may have been silver but now it’s a rust bown/black/undescribable shade of disgusting.  All this for only $1,295, you’d think the seller would be kind enough to toss in a complimentary copy of Leopard as well.

[UPDATE:] A reader pointed out that the auction ended without a buyer; well, good.  Also, in response to the same comment, there is a link to the item, in the very first paragraph.

Why do reporters and bloggers never include a link or an item number so we can see it? 170207891344

The listing ended without a buyer, because if someone had bought it you’d see a buyer name.

On the other side of the coin, one can pick up a decent I-Mac slot loader with OS X Tiger with a 40 Gb hard drive and 512 MB ram for under $100 on E-Bay.

I-Macs are terrific deal for anyone interested in getting into Mac without spending a whole lot. Just make sure its the slot loader and it has the easily accessible ram compartment on the bottom of the case.
