Apple refreshes the iMac; featuring faster processor, graphics
Rumors have been circulating that the iMac would be receiving an update soon. Normally, Apple waits to Tuesday to update its product line but logging onto the Apple website I was greeted with an updated iMac.
What’s new with the updated iMac? The iMac is an all-in-one design, featuring a brushed aluminum casing. (Rumor has it that we will eventually see an aluminum MacBook.) Faster Intel Core 2 Duo processors are seen throughout the new iMac line; 1066 MHz front-side bus; boasting up to 4GB of 8000 MHz DDR@ SDRAM memory; and featuring a widescreen flat panel display that supports millions of colors. You can choose between an 20′ or 24′ flat panel display.
You now have the option to choose a different graphics processor for your iMac. Mac users now have the option to choose NVIDIA 8800 GS with 512MB of video memory. Which is claimed to deliver up to twice the standard performance for graphics heavy applications.
Standard in the iMacs are the built in Airport Extreme this iMac features 802.11n Wi-Fi networking which claims to offer five times the performance of 802.11g. Bluetooth 2.1+EDR is also included, along with built in iSight video camera. Five USB ports are included. You will find two of them located on the Apple keyboard. The iMac also features two Firewire ports. A Firewire 400 port, and a Firewire 800 port.
Badgered mainly by Greenpeace, Apple has continued to make environmental improvements in their product lineup. We have seen improvements with the release of the MacBook Air, MacBook, and MacBook Pro. Every iMac model is rated Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) silver and they also receive the rigorous Energy Star 4.0 for power consumption. The iMac features recyclable parts, professional grade aluminum, and scratch resistant glass.
By the end of 2008 Apple plans to eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardents (BFRs) in its products, and remove arsenic in the glass of flat-panel displays.
The starting price for an iMac is $1199. If you are a federal employee check out the Employee Purchase program. You can also receive discounts if you are a student, teacher, administrator, or staff member. Similar discounts are also available in other countries outside the USA.
If you are thinking of throwing away your old computer Apple will recycle your old computer for free if you purchase a qualifying Apple computer or monitor Apple will recycle your old computer of monitor for free. I did this when I purchase my 17″ MacBook Pro. It’s an excellent program.
