iTunes Music Store turns five; Still the number one music retailer in the USA

iTunes.jpgApril 28, 2003 is an important day for the iTunes music store. You see that is the day the iTunes store was launched. The iTunes software was released a few years earlier, on January 9, 2001.

The iTunes music store has come a long way in five years instead of slowing down its momentum its picking up speed. In March 2008, Apple iTunes became the number two music retailer in the USA when they breezed by Best Buy. Not satisfied with number two they came back in April 2008 blasting past Wal-mart to become the number one music retailer in the USA.

The second week in January 2008 the iTunes store had sold over four billion songs. Not only is iTunes popular in the USA it is extremely popular in other countries also iTunes accounts for over 70% of online digital music sales worldwide.

When you log into iTunes now you are presented with a huge selection of music, videos, podcasts, etc., iTunes has over ten million songs, according to the information available online. iTunes entices their users by offering weekly promotions featuring a variety of artists and each Tuesday they offer free music selections. I didn’t start using iTunes until a few years ago, I’ve stayed because the wide selection of music, movies, and now video rentals that I have to choose. I always check to see what free selections they have for the week.

What’s in store for iTunes? The iTunes music store recently started offering movie rentals making it appealing for users who prefer digital move rentals. iTunes has continued to add wide variety of movie rentals, and to make it more appealing for its users iTunes offers weekly 99 cent movie rentals.
