Free ATT WiFi for iPhone Users *rumor confirmed*

By Leslie Poston

A rumor circulated over the internet that AT&T was providing free WiFi access at various hot spots around the United States for iPhone users. People all over the country were reporting the unusual and seemingly unlikely gift of free WiFi when in a hot spot using their iPhone.

Is it true? It seems that indeed it is. iPhone users can log in to the WiFi hot spots at a variety of locations for free by entering nothing more than their active iPhone cell number.

The source of the rumor (and of the confirmation) provided a photo as proof that this mysterious free WiFi exists. This is pure gold for iPhone users. The cost to log in to WiFi at some of these hot spots is prohibitive. Now iPhone users have more than just a cool phone to hold over the heads of lowly smart phone users - they have free WiFi.

This find comes hot on the heels of AT&T partnering with Starbucks to offer cheaper Wifi for active Starbucks card holders, and announcing a discounted iPhone. If you want to see where the 71,000 AT&T WiFi hot spots that have free iPhone access are, check the AT&T web site, here.

UPDATE: Since this story took the airwaves by storm, AT&T has now CANCELED this service as of May 3, 2008. We’ll keep you posted if that changes.
