Apple says we can have our DVD movies and our iTunes downloads too

May 1, 2008

Apple has assured its loyal fan base that there will be no more waiting for their movie fix on iTunes. The company has announced that from now on, movies will be released to the public for download on iTunes the same day they are released on DVD.

The studios that have signed on to the same day release deal with iTunes are 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios. That means instant gratification for people who don’t want to wait for Netflix or Blockbuster or drive to the nearest video store.

Once you get your hot little hands on the newest movies, like this week’s release of American Gangtser, where can you view it? Your $14.99 (new release) or $9.99 (catalog) buys you the ability to view your movie on your Mac, PC, iPod video, iPhone, and AppleTV. The immediate availability of new releases is a vast improvement over the old system, which made iTunes customers wait about 30 days to see the movies they’d been waiting for.

Movies that were released recently that fall under the New Release category are such popular films as Juno, I Am Legend, There Will Be Blood and Cloverfield, among others. The quality of iTunes movies is comparable to that of a DVD. There are HD versions of many movies available, but if you watch them on your AppleTV, you will find that you are missing some resolution, as the AppleTV only goes to 1280 x 720.
