ooVoo puts free cross platform video chat on your Mac

May 3, 2008

Apple already offers iChat for video chatting on all of its Macs, but people with another platform can’t use iChat. Enter ooVoo with their newly released cross platform solution to the problem. Being able to get in touch with friends, family or coworkers with ease is a much needed solution to that problem.

A quick and painless download of ooVoo’s latest version gets you started. This lets the user send files, receive files, video chat, and text. One of the more interesting aspects of the software is it’s purported ability to import your contacts from other clients for chatting. This is key in an age where data portability is a hot button issue.

The ooVoo video chat provides users with 240×320 resolution and a 30 frame per second rate. It’s throughput requirement of 128k bps is minimal, especially in light of the bandwidth suck that other programs are plagued with.

Philippe Schwartz, CEO of ooVoo, said: “As the highest quality cross platform Mac and PC video chat solution, we look forward to enabling more conversations between Mac and PC users across the globe, and breaking down the traditional barriers of video communication.”

To use ooVoo on your MAc, you need at least 1 GB RAM, an Intel based Mac or the next step down, the G5, your built in iSight or a Mac compatible headset and mic, a fast internet connection and a Mac OS of Tiger and up. Mac OS X Leopard is the preferred choice.
