AOL desktop for Mac released

May 7, 2008

AOL has released the next generation of AOL Desktop for Mac, to the collective sound of a great internet yawn. The world’s worst internet program and provider trying to make a program for the already fully functional Mac is laughable at best.

The AOL Desktop offers web surfing, instant messaging via AIM (AOL Instant Message), email and other “features”. It has been customized for Leopard this time around, which may avoid the lag time the last version faced when used on a machine with the newer operating system.

I flat out can’t endorse using AOL Desktop (or any product under the AOL umbrella outside of AIM, really). There is simply no real need for it. The Mac already does everything AOL’s Desktop claims to do, more efficiently. for tabbed browsing there is the gorgeous Safari. For email there is Mail. For instant messages there is iChat, which already integrates with your AIM name. For fighting clutter and keeping things all in one place, the Dock.

We haven’t even begun to touch Leopard’s other features, like Spaces, and already it is apparent that AOL Desktop is not a useful application. If you have a Mac you don’t need a repeat of what you already have available to you, especially one made by AOL.
