Natuba brings photo storage to the iPhone

By Leslie Poston

For iPhone users who haven’t figured out Flickr, PhotoBucket or other free sites that will offer photo storage for their iPhone, there is now a reportedly iPhone specific solution. Natuba has started a new site that claims to offer iPhone users a little more handholding for their online photo storage needs.

As far as I can see by a quick overview of the site, Natuba offers nothing all that different from Flickr and the rest. It allows you to upload your photos to your Natuba account while mobile, via email. Just like Flickr, and Flickr has been doing it longer.

It seems that Natuba hasn’t tapped a new market with their site, just new marketing. They have figured out that iPhone users like to have things specifically made for their use and are using hat knowledge to get the word out about their site.

Worse, Natuba puts all photos directly into the public eye, streaming into the random photo stream the site offers, called the public activity stream. For people taking pictures of their kids, family or other things they could keep private on other sites, Natuba takes that control away.

Add to that their integration with FaceBook and the displaying of the photos there as well, and you have the potential for real privacy issues on your hands. If a friend takes a compromising photo with you in it, tags it with your name and posts it, you could be famous for all the wrong reasons.

Natuba gets a thumbs down from me. There is too little about it that is unique, except for all the wrong things, like a lack of privacy. I don’t see this site lasting long once people figure that out.

    1. Kirstin Nichol:

I’ve been storing my photos and other documents at a site my boyfriend introduced me to called smestorage.com. It cool because he setup a group between myself and friend and it is easy for us to share photos but also other stuff as well.

I got an Iphone for my birthday (lucky me !) and its awesome - I can use this to access the Iphone version of the site and access my photos on the move (be careful the pictures are not to large though). The mobile site is http://thesmespace.com/smeutils/msmestorage/.

I’m not too techy but I find it pretty easy to use although I’m sure I don’t use all the features.
