Apple: Parallels Desktop for Mac releases a new version supports Vista SP1, XP SP3

By Opal Tribble

parallels-logo.pngParallels Desktop for Mac recently released a new version of its extremely popular software, Parallels Desktop 3. What’s new in Parallel Desktop 3 is support for Vista SP 1 and XP SP3. Numerous fixes have been corrected with this release including unusually high CPU usage, kernal panic issues, along with an improvement to Shared Folders.

Parallels Desktop enables the Mac user to run Windows on a Macintosh, Linux, and other operating systems simultaneously without rebooting. Bootcamp is another software application that allows the Mac user to run Windows but you have to reboot.

When it was first released on June 15, 2006 Parallels Desktop for Mac was originally called Parallels Workstation for Mac. At that time it was the only software suite to bring virtualization mainstream to Intel based Mac computers. Why the name change? Many users within the Mac community thought that name was too similar to Windows products. Parallels agreed stating “Since we’ve got a great Mac product, we should make it look and sound like a Mac product”. The name was changed to Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Parallels Desktop 3 is available as as digital download. You can download it by visiting the Parallels Desktop for Mac Website. The download is 88MB. If you already have Parallels Desktop this is a free update. Parallels Desktop updates your virtual hard disk format in order that it can provide for failures when using snapshots. Since it does this if you decide that you want to use an earlier version of Parallels Desktop, you will have to uninstall Parallels Desktop 3 and reinstall an earlier version.
