D&AD.jpgRecently, Apple received three awards from the British company Design and Art Direction (D&AD.)

What awards did Apple receive? Apple received two of the much coveted black pencil awards. The awards were given to the Aluminum iMac and the iPod Nano. The iPhone Touch snagged the yellow pencil award. The iPod Nano and the aluminum keyboard were nominated but did not receive an award. The Apple Mac notebooks; MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air in the lineup they did not receive a nomination.

What do the awards mean? The black pencil award is given to a piece of work or campaign that is truly groundbreaking; the kind of work that redefines a medium. The yellow pencil is given to a work or campaign that sets new benchmarks of creative excellence. D&AD gives awards in a variety of categories such as Home, Work & Industry, Health & Medical, and Leisure.

Since 1999 Apple has received six black pencil awards from the organization making them the biggest single winner of the coveted black pencil award. D&AD does hand out too many of the black pencil awards; in fact, this is the first time in their 45 year history that it has handed out six black pencil awards in one year.

“Another record broken – the first time in our 45-year history when six Black pencils have been awarded,’ said D&AD President Simon Waterfall in a statement. “This goes to show the impact this diverse range of creative fields are having in pushing forward the wider industry, marketing, and popular culture.”

In 2003 D&AD did not hand out any black pencil awards.

D&AD, formerly known as British Design and Art Direction is a well respected British educational charity that recognizes excellence in design and advertising.

Apple has received several awards over the past few months. They received an award for being the most admired company, and recently they received an award for being number one with customer service.
