Apple Airport Extreme gets electrical power over ethernet

By Leslie Poston

Would you like to be able to place your Airport Extreme farther away from a power source? Now you can. With this new technology, you can put it nearly 330 feet form the wall socket and still get juice to your WiFi set up.

The greater distance from the power source will give people with odd office and home use configurations more options in setting up their wireless network. The technology comes in the form of a kit by MacWireless called the Power Over Ethernet kit, which works with the latest 802.11.n Airport Extreme technology.

The kit works with line of sight technology, allowing you greater distance from your power source by making your ethernet cable into the power source as well as the data transfer source for the Airport Express. The kit has two adapters that plug in and provide both data and electricity over ethernet to your Airport Extreme.

On the MacWireless site the ability to mount your Airport Extreme to the ceiling is touted as a major selling point of the kit. Ceiling mounted WiFi offers a much broader range of coverage. The 300 or so feet you get from a wall mount is increased exponentially when it transmits in a 360° circle.

This increased reach makes the kit a valuable tool for people who want to bring wireless networking to a greater area or to multiple users. Its use in the home where there may be multiple computers in various locations at varying distances from a power source and its use in a cube farm or other business situation could offer more ways to configure the network, and more freedom to work.
