Apple: eBay buyer scores a vintage Twentieth Anniversary Mac (TAM); Shown on YouTube
Al DiBlasi has taken us back ten years in Apple history when he unwrapped a new, mint condition Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, usually called TAM. He purchased it on eBay. eBay is a popular choice of many Mac collectors looking to score vintage Macs.
Al invites us to view the unveiling, from unboxing the Apple TAM to its set up. The Twentieth Anniversary Mac was released in on May 10, 1997, marking the 20th anniversary of the Apple computer, not the Macintosh.
Watching the Youtube video its apparent that Apple was still ahead of its time. Innovation that has become a trademark of Apple computers was apparent back then. The smaller footprint, clean design which is featured in the Apple TAM can be seen in the extremely popular iMac.If you want to get to the unveiling move forward to the 20 minute mark. You’ll also be able to hear the Apple TAMs unique startup chime.
Observing the video you’ll notice that the Apple TAM had a futuristic design which set it apart from many computers on the market. The TAM had a 12″ LCD screen and ATI 3D Rage II video chipset. It used the trackpad from the PowerBook 3400, and it also featured the motherboard from the Power Macintosh 5500 with a 250 MHz 603e processor. What type of video resolution did it have? 800Å~600 with a 16-bit color depth and shipped with System 7.6.1.
The Apple TAM was considered an elite system and upon release it featured a concierge service that offered personalized delivery and set up. However, this was quickly scrapped because of lagging sales. Although the Apple TAM was a flop, the remaining inventory was sold at a los through the Apple developers list, it is still a much sought after computer for Mac collectors.
Here’s hoping that Al gets a lot of enjoyment from the vintage Apple TAM.
