Apple celebrates Black Music Month; 22 artists appearing at various Apple stores
By Opal Tribble
June is Black Music Month. Apple is recognizing this event by featuring in-store performances by 22 popular black artists. The artists will be performing at seven Apple stores located throughout the U.S. The cities that will be featuring the artists are San Francisco, New York, Atlanta, Troy, Michigan, Santa Monica, California, Miami, and Chicago.
Apple wasn’t slacking when it came to the artists that will be performing Billboard reports that Michelle Williams, Tiffany Evans, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Cherish, Wyclef Jean, Janelle Monae, Marvin Sapp, Mike Phillips, Yung Berg, B.o.B., Anthony David, Goapele, Vaughn Anthony, MC Lyte, David Banner, Pastor Troy, Killer Mike, Talib Kweli, DJ Irie, Mistah F.A.B. and E-40.
That’s quite an impressive list of artists, and many of them are regularly in my iPod Nano. Tiffany Evans is new to the music scene and kicked off the month long celebration Sunday, June 1, 2008. She appeared at the Apple Soho location. Tiffany released her self-titled album via Columbia Records this past May.
I’m happy to see that Wylcef Jean and Goapele (pronounced Gwa-pa-lay) two of my favorite artists that I have had the pleasure of meeting a few times already are on the list. MC Lyte is another favorite artist I haven’t met her yet. New York is only a few hours away from where I live and although I would love to attend this event this month will be too busy.
If you never heard of Black Music Month it’s fairly new George W. Bush proclaimed June to be Black Music Month.
Throughout the course of American history, black musicians have used their great talents to share the richness of the African-American experience and to develop a uniquely American style of music enjoyed throughout the world. This month, we honor the pioneers of African-American music and today’s contemporary artists who have enriched the lives of people everywhere.
If you have a chance to attend one of the performances check it out and let us know how you liked it.
