Apple to drop support for PowerPC with Mac OSX 10.6

June 4, 2008

Apple to drop support for PowerPC with Mac OSX 10.6 Who still has a PowerPC Mac?  Not me and probably not you.  So, then it just makes sense for Apple to drop support for PowerPC Macs completely in the next version of Mac OSX.  It’s time to get rid of that PowerPC Mac, if you still have one.

No, I don’t care if it still works, get rid of it.  Apple has decided that it is time to move on to the better, superior ways of Intel completely so the next version of Mac OSX will not have any support for PowerPC Macs, at all.

According to AppleInsider, an early version of Mac OSX 10.6 is expected to be shown off at WWDC with the actual launch next year at MacWorld.  Apple is expected to make the push for a 64-bit Intel-only version of Mac OSX 10.6 pushing developers to get onboard with the x86/64-only code.

Well, finally, no more support for PowerPC Macs.  It’s about time.  Old technology is useless.  Kudos for Apple for finally leaving the past in the past.

I won’t shed a tear if you decide to hang on to your aging and useless PowerPC Mac, you’ll be stuck with Leopard and the rest of us can feel free to move on to Mac OSX 10.6 but why upgrade?  Just buy a new Mac when it is released.  (Okay, that’s going a bit far, even for me).

I am one of those persons who still have a PowerPC Mac (and 2 Intel Macs). Even if this rumor is true, I certainly won’t be giving the PPC Mac up. It still works fine and runs Leopard acceptably.

Just because YOU have to have the latest software and hardware does not mean that others have to follow suit. There are lots of people who do not have a big wallet and a PPC Mac running Leopard will still serve them well.

Right on! My Power PC is only three years old. I have the 2.7 Dual Processor and it is pimped out with 6.5 gigs of Ram and extra hard drives. I have used the newer intel machines, and they only seem marginally faster than my machine (although, admittedly much quieter). I hope Apple does not make all those who bought their professional desktop machines only three years ago (and sooner) regret the decision. Apple seems to stand behind their great products, so let’s hope the power-intensive PowerPC’s have one more OS upgrade to retire them on.

This guy is a total fuckface! Fuck you, dude.. PowerPC works for me.. And I just got this DUAL 1.25 MDD G4.. I don’t use Apple’s apps(FCP, Photoshop, etc..), I only use my mac for everyday stuff. Its running Leopard and it is blisterly fast under Leopard. I just got a new 7800 GEFORCE GS video card and core image works great! So, you and the intel macs can go to hell where they belong. CURSE YOU! Nazi!

  4. DK:

Look dude.. you just keep shelling out top dollar for that “new” technology, and i’ll keep buying it from you for a fraction of what you wasted on it.
And guess what, I almost guarantee we do basically the same things with our systems, you just fall for the marketing hype and waste too much of your money in the process.

Not to jump wagon, but I don’t completely agree with your leftist approach at this topic. I run a G5 PPC and an Intel core2duo imac 20″. The PPC still holds it’s own and on most occasions pwns the imac. Can’t complain about supporting legacy software though. Most companies do move on. As long as there is support forums for issues on PPC 10.5 .. I could give 2 shits about having 10.6 until it’s in final releases when the damn thing IS stable. I only moved to 10.5 on the PPC because it was avail, and it works fine. DK is right. People buy the newest product because of Apple’s high-turnover in their technology – coining the phrase “Mac Douches” – Does ANYONE see a flaw in this system of development??? It’s backwards. No longevity at all, unless you hold onto legacy software and machines. Stop buying shit and be happy. Marketing geniuses, maybe. Technology leaders … I think not. Too many good ideas to stick to one and nurture it. Imagine if automobile companies kept redesigning cars every year??? Oh, wait! The Big 3!! hahhaha … wasted money and look where they are today.

The last PowerMac G5 was discontinued in August 2006 and I would bet that there were still some being sold at Apple Stores beyond this date. This means that when 10.6 comes out there will be customers whose computers are still under WARRANTY if they purchased AppleCare and will not be able to run the new operating system! This is not only outrageous, it is incredibly stupid from a company that claims to be trying to get people to ’switch’. Of course, apple is really not that concerned with acquiring new users to their platform, they are content to cruise along at their current level because they know there are enough kool-aid drinking douchebags with more money than sense who will happily shill out $2000+ every couple of years just to keep up.

Well I have a powerbook g4 15 1.67ghz 2gb ram firewire isight with Leopard 10.5.6 and I works great! I had the first intel MBP and its dead and gone. My powerbook with leopard still works like new. One reason to leave tiger for leopard ….my powerbook track pad now allows me to use two fingers and track button for right click. If you got a ppc mac and it works, keep it until its dies…… those things were built to last. Only thing is playback for HD video…. (if its ur priority then you use your computer to dick around)….. does not play very well in g4 and below processors.

what a load of bs!! powerpc macs are very much still in use today!! the daily mail in london use hundreds of powermacs and alot of studios and stuff use G5’s and they are all alot faster then most of todays pcs. new macs arent superior enough to warrant throwing out all the ppc ones. whoever wrote this is a joke. im typing this on a G3 ibook which runs 100 times faster then my windows xp desktop bought new last year.rant over, long live powerpc macs
