Jobs plans sneak peak of Apple’s OS X 10.6 at WWDC

June 4, 2008

Apple’s OS X Leopard, now on update 10.5.3, has long been accused of being released before it was ready. Apple is already working on update 10.5.4 just a short week after releasing the last major update, which had nearly 200 fixes and upgrades in it. It comes as something of a surprise, then that rumors of an OS X 10.6 would be circulating as a potential WWDC announcement.

Circulating they are however, in true Mac junkie fashion. Steve Jobs is now rumored to be announcing the search for developers to create Mac OS X 10.6 at the upcoming WWDC, as well as introducing the store for developer’s apps for the iPhone.

Even though it seems a bit fast to be calling for developers to work on the next OS, in reality it is in keeping with the previously declared 12 – 18 month OS development cycle:

“I’m quite pleased with the pace of new operating systems every 12 to 18 months for the foreseeable future,” Jobs said. “We’ve put out major releases on the average of one a year, and it’s given us the ability to polish and polish and improve and improve.”

Interesting sub text to these rumors is that the next Mac OS will no longer offer PowerPC compatibility. Having an Intel only OS would pave the way for some slick innovations to such popular features as Spaces and Expose, currently lacking the oomph I think they could have if they were free to play on the faster platform. Meanwhile,  QuickSilver junkies like myself long for QuickSilver to work properly on the OS X 10.5.4 release and hope that they remember to plan for QuickSilver users in OS 10.6.

I do not know where your claim of Leopard “has long been accused of being released before it was ready” came from. I certainly have no problems with Leopard myself and Leopard in the original release version is much better than the crap known as Vista, which I vowed never to use. The updates just make Leopard a whole lot better again.

As you yourself said, 10.6 appearing at WWDC is just a rumor. Personally I regard all these 10.6 rumors with a grain of salt.
