WWDC countdown is in full swing; Fake 3G iPhone photos ignite the web

By Opal Tribble

WWDC08.jpgMany of us have been eagerly awaiting for the WWDC so we can finally see Steve Jobs announce that the worst kept secret, the 3G iPhone, is here. Apple of course isn’t saying anything. It’s a smart move.

The less Apple tells the public they more people will talk about it. We surely love to discuss this mysterious device. Many news outlets, bloggers, and pundits are attempting to connect the dots based on the rumors and speculations surrounding this device.

Amazingly Apple has done an excellent job of keeping the information about the next generation iPhone private. The information we are all dying to know about the 3G iPhone is still a mystery to us and is securely locked away under a shroud of mystery, or is it?

Crunch Gear is reporting that an source has dropped the ball and has taken pictures of the newest iPhone. Checking out the photo the “new iPhone” appears to be thinner than the current model, appears to be the same screen, the speakers are located in the back, and according to this photo it will be available in red.

“Video just became a little more fun. Start a real time video chat with other AT&T subscribers via 3G networking, or with iChat buddies via WiFi. The video calling revolution has begun.”

Pretty exciting stuff until people started analyzing the pictures. Many who are familiar with the iPhone noted some mistakes an unfamiliar green icon, iPhone box shown on the photo had only three rows from the top. iPhone has three rows from the top. Several questioned why would Apple send a single box? Doesn’t Apple normally send its products out to partners and resellers? As we enter the final days leading up to the event, it’s definitely a possibility that we’ll see additional leaked photos appear.

If you are growing tired of the hype surrounding the iPhone and want to read information straight from the source you might want to check out the patent that was filed by Apple. Granted everything filed in here by Apple won’t be making its way into the iPhone but I’m sure we’ll see some of them make an appearance.

The device supports a variety of applications, such as one or more of the following: a telephone application, a video conferencing application, an e-mail application, an instant messaging application, a blogging application, a photo management application, a digital camera application, a digital video camera application, a web browsing application, a digital music player application, and/or a digital video player application.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published the document on May 29, 2008 It’s a comprehensive report and the patent appears to include features related to the 3G iPhone and software version 2.0. A lot of information is covered in the document such as support for inline media, including Flash, and Windows Media.

You can check out the iPhone patent application by logging onto the website.

I travel to South Carolina often, and the area I visit has bad AT&T reception. It’s the only reason I haven’t purchased an iPhone. I would like to see the 3G iPhone available to all cell phone carriers however I’m not holding my breath.
