iPhone 3G has arrived: Twice as fast, starting at $199; GPS included

With the first generation iPhones birthday rapidly approaching on June 29, 2008 it seemed obvious that the iPhone 3G would eventually make an appearance. There has been so much hype about this product that many people were getting impatient. The question that many people wondered was on when would it be released?
Several were hoping that it would be announced today, at the opening of the Worldwide Developers Conference. Thousands of people flocked to the keynote presentation or tuned in through text or audio feed to hoping the iPhone 3G would be unveiled. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, kept people hanging on until near the end of the event where we finally got our first glimpse of the second generation iPhone.
The iPhone 3G is thinner, and thanks to 3G technology it’s a lot faster. Apple in its hopes to reach a large audience had a few surprises up its creative sleeve. According to Steve “56% of people wanted an iPhone but didn’t get one because of its price.” Apple listened to those 56%, the iPhone 3G was announced today and Apple has lowered its price significantly.
The iPhone 3G will be available in two memory sizes; 8GB and 16GB. iPhone 3G 8GB is available in black and will sell worldwide for $199. The 16GB version will sell for $299 and you have two colors to choose from; black and white.

Many of the features that people loved in the first generation iPhone are carried over to the iPhone 3G. Besides the new color you’ll also find these additional features.
- iPhone in Enterprise
- Maps with GPS
- The App Store
Offers support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync along with push email, calendar and contacts right in the palm of your hand.
GPS allows you to find your directions, and track your progress along the way.
Enables you to browse applications from anywhere. Download and purchase your favorites. Some of them are free!
A noticeable improvement in the iPhone 3G is its battery life.
- 300 hours of standby time
- 2G talk-time used to be five hours it has increased to ten hours.
- 5 hours of 3G talk-time (most 3G phones only have three hours talk-time).
- Five hours of high speed browsing
- Seven hours of video
- 24 hours of audio
Thanks to 3G technology iPhone 3G users will be able to experience faster downloads, which will come in handy when surfing Safari or checking your email. When comparing download speeds between 3G and EDGE, 3G finished in 21 seconds while EDGE finished in 59 seconds.
If you were looking to purchase this popular phone once it was announced you will have to wait a little bit longer. The iPhone 3G won’t be available until July 11, 2008. The iPhone 3G will be available in 70 countries.
Apple entered the smartphone market a little under a year ago. Apple is now the #3 smartphone vendor worldwide, and additionally Apple has snagged the #2 spot in the U.S. With the release of the second generation iPhone boasting 3G technology, added features, and a lower price I’m betting that Apple will reach its goal of selling ten million iPhones by the end of 2008.
