iTunes Store has sold more than five billion songs
Back in 2003, “hell froze over†when Apple released iTunes 4.1 for Windows 2000 and XP. Flash forward to today where iTunes is one of the most popular if not the most popular jukebox software on Macs or PCs.
The latest version of iTunes is 7.6 but many complaints were registered about version 7. Something happened between the last 6.x iteration and the release of version 7. It’s almost as if Apple decided that version 6 was too good or too close to its Mac counterpart when running on PCs. Something definitely changed with version 7 which could be considered less reliable than version 6 was for PCs.
It’s still the best jukebox software but there are some competitors for it like Songbird and MediaMonkey. Songbird’s interface is sluggish and unresponsive but that’s due to the fact it’s still in the Alpha development stages at version 0.6.
MediaMonkey may be the best alternative but the default configuration lacks support for AAC encoding which is a deal-killer for me.
None of this can change the fact that iTunes has the best store integration and ease of buying songs and synching your iPod.
To date the iTunes Store has sold more than five billion songs and rents or sells 50,000 movies daily. This makes it the most popular online music and movie retailer in the US. The current selection in the iTunes Store includes eight million songs, 20,000 TV episodes and 2,000 movies with a subset of 350 available in high-definition.
