Apple: Mercedes to offer iPhone integration
An iMac in every room and now iPhone integration in cars? Apple has definitely made an impression, and its products are becoming products that consumers just have to have. Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to launch a device that places the device into the center console.
Mercedes-Benz already offers a cradle for iPod and iPhone integration in its cars, but speaking from personal experience it’s an annoyance. Currently controls are located on the left side of the steering wheel. While this is convenient for the driver, it can be risky if a good luck passenger to try to switch to something they like. It isn’t worth the risk and could cause you to have an accident.
With the updated system Mercedes-Benz has corrected this problem. In the newest version, we’ll see the iPod and media integration kit located into the COMAND nav/multimedia system. I’m liking it already, it makes you wonder why they did not do this initially? Additionally, Mercedes has announced it will be releasing a new iPhone and iPod cradle. Not only does it charge your device it also supports hands-free calling for the iPhone. Once your iPhone is hooked up you have control of all phone and audio functions.
How long do we have to wait? Not too long this feature is expected to be available in Mercedes 2009 vehicles; however, if you are an owner of 2008 or older vehicle you’ll still be able to get the hookup. Mercedes is planning to offer an iPhone kit that can be retrofitted into older vehicles.
The new software will cost $60. Although pricing for the cradle hasn’t been officially announced it is expected to cost under $400. Electronics are quickly becoming the norm. Many car manufacturers are quickly updating their cars to accommodate consumer demands.
