Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac gets update

June 28, 2008

Mac users often suffer at the hands of Microsoft’s lackadaisical approach to Mac-centric software production and the ones affected most are often the Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 users. With its staffing increase for the Microsoft Mac Business Division and the release of an upgrade for the Office for Mac software, Microsoft seems to be finally turning that around, at least on the surface.

The update for Microsoft Office for Mac is Update 12.1.1. It offers a wide variety of much-needed fixes for the program suite. One of the biggest issues the company claims to have fixed is the DocX file extension issue. Macs have had trouble using DocX files since the format first appeared in the Windows version, and it is my hope that the issue is finally fixed.

Other issues included as fixes or upgrades in the overhaul include stability – no more unexpected crashes while in a program. In fact, Microsoft claims to have fixed a number of issues we’ve all been having with stability, crashing and inability to save files. All of which are key functions that should just just work right out of the box, so that’s good that they took the time to go back and make that happen after all these months.

In spite of the long list of upgrades, updates, additions and bug fixes (found here), Microsoft’s Office suite is becoming more and more obsolete as Mac users turn to Open Source solutions and online documents systems like NeoOffice and Google’s Docs. As the internet makes solutions more egalitarian, companies like Microsoft are going to have to up the ante and put out more stable products at lower prices. Users aren’t willing to wait for bug fixes when they are becoming used to the instant gratification of Open Source and Web 2.0.
