Interest in Apple’s iPhone 3G piling up before official release

June 30, 2008

The potential success of a product can often be measured by the amount of buzz it receives before its launch. It can also be measured in pre-sales metrics. How many people pre-order an item or sign up to be notified when an item is ready for purchase is an example of a pre-sales metric. Apple’s iPhone 3G pre-sales metrics and buzz levels are off the charts.

It’s a good sign that even before the lackluster keynote at WWDC people were anticipating the iPhone 3G release. When the less than stellar keynote failed to dampen interest, it became clear Apple really had our attention with this product upgrade.

Nearly everyone seems to want this shiny new trinket. Sadly, Apple is still losing out on many sales because it hitched its wagon to the heinous AT&T, but even that isn’t dampening the roar of the pending release to the drooling masses. Many are finally making plans to buy an iPhone 3G even though it still doesn’t have video (really, Apple, why should we have to hack the iPhone for video after all this time?) and its photos are less than ideal.

It is the 3G that seems to be driving sales. Many of the people who plan to buy are early adopters of most shiny new objects on and off line, and will be dumping the iPhone first generation they bought last year in favor of this one. However, many are new purchasers, lured in by the improvements or by playing with the iPhones of others. (If you don’t want to switch to an iPhone, don’t play with one. It is very hard to resist once you’ve petted its shiny surface.)

When can you get your hands on one of these sleek, shiny new iPhone 3Gs? They officially go on sale July 11th. Are you going to stand in line for the whole iPhone 3G shopping experience, or pre-order yours? I’m still not getting one because of the AT&T issue, but boy do I want one. Lucky for my wallet, I’m stubborn and sticking with Verizon and my HTC Mogul. Maybe one day Apple will release a Verizon version (hey, I can hope).
