MobileMe is coming soon; Mac users don’t forget to sync your bookmarks
By Opal Tribble
With the imminent release of MobileMe Apple has sent out an alert to all .Mac subscribers, they need to sync their bookmarks on all machines before Sunday, June 6, 2008. Why? Access to bookmarks will be discontinued after that date.
At the WWDC ‘08 Apple, senior vice-president of Worldwide Product Marketing described MobileMe as “Exchange for the rest of us.” MobileMe has a lot of fabulous features. For example, when you add contacts to your Address book it shows up seconds later in your iPhone contact list. MobileMe accomplishes this by using wireless networking data to maintain current data on all users devices. MobileMe integrates with iCal, Address, Mail, on a Mac and Microsoft Outlook on your PC.
MobileMe is much better than .Mac; however, there is one option that has been removed that has been receiving a lot of criticism. Users will no longer have web access to their bookmarks. Picture this, a .Mac member only owns a desktop MacPro or iMac at home. (Yes, shocking as it may be there are many people who don’t own a laptop or notebook computer.) The .Mac user is away from home and needs to access some of their bookmarks. Under .Mac the user, still is able to access them. Logging onto the users .Mac account will give them access to the bookmarks. However under MobileMe you can kiss web access goodbye. Hopefully, Apple will bring back web access in an update; however, if you need web access to your bookmarks, I would suggest using del.icio.us or Google bookmarks.
If you are a Mac user, you won’t have to pay additional fees to use the service you will be upgraded to MobileMe automatically. If you’re new to the service Apple will let you try before you buy for 60 days (not a bad deal) after that time the service will cost $99 per year.
