Zapptek launches Legends; offering digital books for iPhone and iPod touch

By Opal Tribble

itunes-logo.JPGHow would you like to carry a virtual library in your pocket? It’s now a possibility thanks to the premier book service Legends, which is being introduced by ZappTek. Just like Amazon Kindle, users will be able to read books from an Apple handheld device.

Presently the selection that Zapptek’s Legends is offering isn’t huge; in fact, the only author you’ll find is New York Times bestseller Michael A. Stockpile. However many more authors will have have their books and short stories features at Legends soon. You’ll find a number of Michael’s short and novel length fiction titles available; Least of My Brethren, Jed and the Titanium Turtle, Kid Binary and the Two-Bit Gang, Once a Hero, The Silver Knife, Serpent On The Station, to name a few.

Zapptek’s Legend will be available exclusively through the iTunes/App Store/iTune. Each book will appear under its own name under the Entertainment category.

As you can see each book, you’ve purchased displays as an icon on the Home screen. I’m wondering if there is a way to hide this feature. If you purchase a lot of books through the Legend service your home screen will get cluttered very quickly.

The Legends offers a lot of cool features

  1. Screen rotation
  2. Rotating the screen will give you the opportunity to read books at a glance

  3. Bookmarks
  4. Ever forgotten where you left off in a book? I know I have, Legends automatically remember where they’ve been left off so you don’t have to worry about putting your Apple device down to complete your errands or changing songs on your iPod touch or iPhone.

  5. Notetaking
  6. Zapptek-Legends-Notes.jpg If you enjoy jotting notes in your books, you’ll appreciate note taking feature that has been included in the Legends application. It gives you the option to write notes on every single page. When I’ve wanted to write down notes I write it on a piece of paper and include it in the book, occasionally I’ll add my book notes to Scrivener. The problem is they aren’t attached to my book anymore.

  7. Tapping
  8. Double tapping the screen will allow the user to zoom in on a particular section. If you are in area that has poor lighting triple tap the screen to invert the display.

Zapptek’s Legends will be available on July 11, which happens to be same day the iPhone 3G and the Apps store are officially avialable. Purchases can be made by logging onto the iTunes app store. You’ll find Legends in the Entertainment category. Short story prices will start at $1.99 and novels will be available for $4.99. Currently the only languages supported are English and you must have an iPhone or iPod touch 2.0 to use Zapptek’s Legends.

ZappTek was created in Michael Zapp in 2002. It is based in Winnepeg, Canada. It originally began as a way to add calendar and note information into the Contact entries of the original iPod. It’s an application I use with my iPod. Since its launch, Zapptek has grown considerably and you can now find an entire suite of applications for your mobile devices besides Legends you can purchase iPDA, iPresent, iSpeak, iPod Launcher, and iCal e-mail notifications.
