Apple releases iTunes 7.7; App store goes live

July 10, 2008

App-Store-Twitterific.jpgAs expected, Apple released the much-anticipated update for iTunes — you know, the one that is needed for the App store? iTunes 7.7 is now available for download. If you’re wanting to try out all the applications that are available for the iPhone touch and the iPhone 3G you’ll have to download it.

Early this morning when I accessed Software Update from the iTunes menu, it wasn’t available for download; however I was able to access the download by going straight to the iTunes download page. The download is 47.9 Mb. You can use iTunes 7.7 to download music, purchase or rent videos, and much more.

The App store went live today as well. You’ll now be able to purchase applications for the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G (which is being released tomorrow), and the iPod touch. There are over 500 applications already available, and there are many categories to choose from such as Business, Education, Entertainment, Finance, Games, Healthcare and Fitness, and more.

The prices of the apps vary. Logging onto the iTunes App store, you’ll find applications under a $1.00. I’ve seen them as high as $40. Don’t want to pay for the apps? No problem. If you look under categories you’ll see that you can choose All iPhone selections, All iPod Touch selections, and All Free Applications. Currently, there are seven pages of free applications available for the iPhone and the iPod touch.

If you are having problems accessing the iTunes App store, you’re not alone. Others have stated that they have been able to access the App store after downloading iTunes 7.7. In fact, I ran into the same problem after I downloaded it. The fix is simple — you need to update your iTunes preferences.

How do you update my iTunes preferences?

  1. Log onto iTunes
  2. Click on iTunes in the top left hand corner
  3. Choose Preferences
  4. Under the Show category make sure Applications is checked

You don’t have to purchase an iPhone 3G to download the applications to your current generation iPhone. The App store is compatible with the iPhone and the iPod touch. Don’t forget that you’ll need the iPhone 2.0 software. Many people have been eagerly awaiting the App store going live, so I imagine it will be receiving a lot of traffic for a while as people check out what’s available.
