Apple sends out MobileMe mea culpa

July 17, 2008

If you are an Apple user who signed up for MobileMe on purpose or who just got transitioned over from your existing .Mac account, chances are you received the vague apology-like email from Apple this week. Why apology-like? Because on careful reading it really wasn’t a true apology.

Couched in the form of an apology, the Apple email was more damage control than anything else. It certainly seems like many of the Apple launches lately have had that aspect of damage control. What happened to Apple’s former insistence on not releasing any product until it was completely ready? I think it went the way of the Dodo bird around the time of the first Leopard release several months ago.

Regardless, users of MobileMe received an apology of sorts, as well as 30 days free added to their year contract with the service, and a pledge to not use the word “push” yet. That’s right, it seems Apple is under the impression that by not saying the word push out loud, users will magically not expect the instantaneous push sync capabilities that were promised as part of MobileMe. It’s a sound assumption, look how well it is not working for Twitter, all the not talking about the missing “with friends” tab or track functions.

Amidst all this talk of apologies, non-apologies, controlling a product campaign’s buzz and spin, I noticed something else. Maybe I’m the last to notice this, I’ve been so busy lately, but does the logo for MobileMe remind anyone of anything? Take a look at the picture below and tell me if you think the MobileMe logo looks stunningly like the WindowsMe logo from way back. I don’t think it matters, aside from Apple being renowned for original design and so blatantly seeming to miss the mark here, but I noticed, and you’d assume other have as well.
