Is Apple putting too many eggs in one basket with the iPhone 3G hype?
If you live anywhere in the continental United States (and probably other places too, but I have to write about what I know, right?) then you have been completely unable to escape news of the iPhone 3G for the last few weeks or months. Last year the same level of hype followed the iPhone’s initial release.
I agree that the iPhone in all its forms is fun to use and does many things better than the rest, but it lacks features other phones now have standard, like video. It also lacks replaceable battery, a kicker for me. That isn’t even touching the exclusive deal with craptacular AT&T.
This phone is touted as the be all end all of phones, the Holy Grail. The Apple marketing machine is in full force on this one, and to what end? Is the iPhone becoming the company’s single constant revenue stream? Are Jobs and company neglecting product development in other areas to put all the eggs in one basket?
I’m not sure. The company supposedly has a new product coming out that many speculate is a notebook under $1000, but they are also predicting a downturn in their bottom line. The last “big” thing Apple released, the MacBook Air, has a very limited market of potential customers. The iPod Touch is cool, but caping out at 32GB limits its appeal to people like me with massive music collections.
Is Apple losing its inventiveness, its spark? Are they spending too much time on the iPhone to the detriment of their desktop, server and laptop products? I hope I’m wrong. I hope that while they distract us with the iPhone 3G they are turning the AppleTV into a super gaming console and DVR that works with all services, creating a cheaper, better entry level laptop, and bring Macs in line with gaming specs, finally. We’ll see.
