airport-extreme.jpgRecently, when I logged onto my MacBook Pro I was greeted with a familiar pop up screen letting me know that Airport Extreme had received a software update. Logging onto the Airport Extreme software update page you’ll see one of Apple’s brief messages. Apple says this update should improve the reliability of Airport connections, along with adding compatibility with Logic, Mainstage, GarageBand, and other audio applications.

Apple is recommending this upgrade for all Intel-based Mac computers that are running Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger). You can obtain the update by snagging it from the Apple’s Airport Extreme software update page. You can also download the update from your Mac, which is located under the Apple Menu.

  • Your Mac allows you to check for updates daily, weekly, or monthly. When new updates become available your Software Update will alert you of the update and ask if you would like it to be installed on your Mac. If you won’t want to be alerted make sure you uncheck “Check for Updates” option.

The AirPort Extreme is a local area wireless networking brand from Apple Inc. I purchased my first 17″ Mac in 2006 initially I went with the Belkin brand, but I was constantly losing connection. I switched to the Airport Extreme. I’ve rarely had connectivity issues since I made the switch. The Airport Extreme is based on the IEEE 802.11g standard (many people refer to this as Wi-Fi).

Apple upgraded the Airport Extreme in January 2007. This upgrade allowed users to receive faster wireless network connectivity since Apple employed the 802.11n draft standard in this refresh. Apple claimed that users would see five times the performance of previous models which used the 802.11g. I upgraded soon after the new Airport Extreme was released and I did notice that sending large files didn’t take as long as with my version.

If you are an Airport Extreme user that missed this important update log onto the Apple Airport Extreme update 2008-002 or download it from the Apple menu.
