Apple gains a steady lead Western Europe’s education market; Apple still number one in notebook sales
By Opal Tribble
According to second quarter sales, Apple is gaining a steady lead in the Western European education market. Currently Apple has 19.2 percent of the market share for CPUs and servers. Apple is still maintaining its lead for notebook sales in the UK. It overtook Dell to climb into the top spot. Similarly here in the USA, Apple beat out Dell to become the number one seller of laptop computers in the USA.
Gartner Research figures estimate that Apple’s education market share, in the UK, is at 17.2 percent. Many speculate that the success of its other products has something to do with people making the switch to Macs, people also switch over after having tried out products like the extremely popular iPhone 3G or the iPod touch. Apple’s iTunes is currently the number one music retailer in the USA. How successful is Apple in the education market? During the third quarter earnings call last month Apple reported that they received a 25 percent overall growth in education sales. It’s their best growth ever.
Apple has numerous incentives geared to those within education not only here in the USA but in numerous other countries also. Depending on what school you attend or college course you take a Mac computer might be a requirement. When my daughter enters the second grade she will be required to get a Mac notebook computer. I have a few friends that live in the UK and one of them had to purchase a MacBook for one of their classes.
Apple has many attractive offers for those in education. Potential Mac users can take advantage of the education discount. I’ve used it when I purchased my Macs, and it has saved me a few thousand dollars easily. Another incentive is the Back to School offers targeted at students. When I purchased my MacBook Pro in 2006 they deal they offered was a free printer to accompany a qualifying Mac. Currently Apple is offering customers a $299 rebate which is can be used to for an iPod of their choice when the student purchases a qualifying Mac. If the rebates are similar to when I purchased my MacBook Pro the rebate is instant so you don’t have to wait around to receive cash back for the iPod.
