Apple: Steve Jobs admits MobileMe screwup; It’s not up to Apple standards

By Opal Tribble

apple.jpegIf you’ve been keeping close tabs on Apple the past few months you would have heard the rumors surrounding around about .Mac evidence was pointing to major change in the service. Not only was the url being changed to Me.com it was receiving a brand-new name, MobileMe. The new service had a lot of new features that would add appeal to the average user. Many of the features that users come to depend on in the office was finally making its way into the average users.

Recently Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, sent out an email to employees admitting to the mistakes made with the service. The email stated that the service launch was “not up to Apple standards.” In the email Jobs talked about MobileMe’s flaws and went on to discuss how Apple could have handled the situation better. He added what many people have already mentioned that MobileMe needed more time and testing. Jobs also mentioned that it was a mistake to launch MobileMe along with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software, and the App store. Jobs went on to say, “We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.”

It’s great that Jobs acknowledge this in the email; however, it does make you wonder what was Apple thinking about when it released the product? I signed up for a 30 day trial membership since it gave me a perfect opportunity to get review the service. It’ my first bad experience I’ve had with an Apple product. Synchronization between all my devices wasn’t happening as quickly as Apple claimed at the WWDC ‘08. At times, it didn’t happen at all.

MobileMe was launched along with the iPhone 3G and the iPhone App store. Three major additions brought to us from the Apple lineup. However, MobileMe had its share of problems and was obviously not ready to be launched. Shortly after the MobileMe blunder Apple issued an apology to all MobileMe customers extending their service by an additional 30 days. Also, Apple created a MobileMe status blog, giving users another way to check its progress. I like the features that were showcased at the WWDC ‘08. It definitely has the potential to be a great Apple product however it’s not there yet. Eddy Cue, who is in charge of the iTunes store, is now also heading the MobileMe tea and Internet services. Ars Technica has a copy of the full email on its website.

Have you used the MobileMe service? If so, how was your experience?
