Apple R&D building experiencing 3-alarm fire

By Leslie Poston

Breaking news has a three alarm fire occuring at Apple’s Cupertino, California headquarters in their R&D building Valley Green 6. No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters had a prompt and efficient response to the blaze, which continues to fill the Cupertino air with black smoke as we write this article. You can see video of the initial response to the blaze here.

News anchors from CBS5 in the South Bay reported that the fire fighter response was strong. They also stated that the building seemed to be under construction of some kind judging by observations from the street.

One of the firefighters interviewed on the scene, Deputy Chief Hal Rooney, stated that there were no injuries of civilians or firefighters occurred, and that a total of 66 firefighters responded to the call. The initial call was made by a worker on the scene. The firefighter also stated that there would continue to be ventilation effort to contain the blaze.

The effect of the water damage from fighting the fire, the demolition involved in ventilating the building to contain the fire, and the fire itself on any R&R projects in the building is not known. A of this article there was not yet a response to the blaze from an Apple representative, though I will come back and update it as news breaks throughout the day.

Update: So far the best guess as to the cause of the fire is repairs to air conditioning units on that floor of the Valley Green Six building. It is presumed that the bulk of the damage will be smoke related, not fire damage, though Apple and fire department officials have yet to confirm this.
