Apple: iTunes participates in Stand Up To Cancer; Music stars lend their voices
By Opal Tribble
What does A Walk To Remember and Walk To Cure have in common? They both are charity events that were held for Alzheimer and cancer. Apple iTunes has recently stepped up to the plate for another worthy cause, Stand up to Cancer.

Logging onto iTunes you’ll notice charitable single, Just Stand Up! has been released. Some of the top music stars will be lending their voices to support this valuable cause. If you purchase Stand Up To Cancer you’ll have the chance to hear vocals stars Ashanti, Beyonce, Natasha Bedingfield, Mary J. Blige, Fergie, Mariah Carey, Ciari, Keyisha Cole, Sheryl Crow, Miles Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, LeAnn Rimes, and Carrie Underwood.
The single was produced by Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and L.A. Reid. Reid is the Chairman of Island Def Jam Records. I enjoyed listening to music produced by this talented duo (Babyface and L.A. Reid) back in the day so it’s nice to see them getting back together for this important cause. This makes their first collaboration in twenty years.
All proceeds from the Apple iTunes single will go directly to the cancer charity, Stand Up To Cancer. The fifteen singers will share the spotlight to perform this song live on Friday, September 5th during the Stand Up To Cancer television special which will air simultaneously on ABC, NBC, and CBS. There will also be a telethon accompanying the event so those who would like to donate money but don’t want to purchase the Stand Up single can make a pledge during the event.
Stand up To Cancer (SU2C) is a charitable program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF). It was created by people in the media, entertainment, along with philanthropic leaders who were all affected by cancer. SU2C hopes to raise awareness, bring people together, and show that this cancer community is not an isolated and disparate collection of individuals but the community at large.
Many of us know someone who has been affected with cancer. My cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer about four years ago. She passed away almost two years after the diagnosis. She was only twenty-four. Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. According to the American Cancer Society out of every two men and one out of every three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Steve’s health has been under scrutiny for some time, but he has fought back and continually impressed us with the quality of the products that Apple continually delivers.
I logged onto my MacBook Pro this morning an purchased Just Stand Up! from the iTunes online store. I’ve really enjoy the song and have added it to my iPod nano and my iPod touch. It’s nice to know that my purchase goes for a valuable cause.
Apple’s iTunes has received a lot of press over the past several months. This past ApriliTunes became the number one music retailer in the United States. Having the Just Stand Up! single featured at the Apple iTunes store is an excellent way to receive proceeds to help those with cancer. If you want to learn more about Stand Up to Cancer you can log onto the Stand Up To Cancer website.
