Mac OS Leopard 10.5.5 update released to fix 33 bugs
By Leslie Poston
Apple has finally released the much anticipated Mac OS Leopard 10.5.5 update today, fixing more than 30 issues the operating system and related applications. The question on everyone’s mind is: does this update fix the problems I’ve been having with MobileMe?
The answer to that is yes, this update is supposed to fix the bug in MobileMe that was causing sync and back up trouble. Now MobileMe syncing should work, and so should Back To My Mac. since MobileMe hasn’t really worked consistently since it was released I won’t hold my breathe on that one.
If you have been having issues using popular calendar application iCal, they are addressed in this update as well. Syncing has been adjusted so that it is much more reliable when you have repeating events. There is also a fix for calendar to calendar event moves and attendee lists. These fixes should make iCal more reliable, eliminating duplicate events and other weird glitches users have been experiencing.
Email issues, especially with IMAP use, have been addressed, as has the RSS reader built into Mail. The Disk Utility and Directory Utility have also been updated. They now are more reliable and stable, especially when rebuilding a RAID software mirror in the Disk Utility.
Time Machine, a feature I have only used once then discarded due to instability and the annoying habit of taking over and entire external drive, also got a face lift. Now, if you are a Time Capsule user you will notice that a pesky false alert about disk space has been removed, and service reliability issues during backups have been addressed as well, making it more stable over all.
The update also fixes a number of other issues, from iPhone and iPod syncing problems to Spotlight indexing function. This has been said to be the last update before Snow Leopard. I’m not sure how accurate that last rumor is - I’m guessing with Leopard’s spotty launch and annoyingly beta like roll out we may be looking at a few more fixes, thought they may be unplanned.
