Apple putting its own chips into iPhones?

September 19, 2008

When Apple bought PASemi a while back, no one was sure what it had planned for the little company. Suddenly, the internet is abuzz with speculation that Apple has big plans to use the the recent acquisition in their iPhone line.

How would they go about merging the two properties? Some say by manufacturing the chips for the iPhone line completely in house. That would certainly be an about face for Apple, up until now dependent on third parties for the essential ingredients to the secret sauce of their products.

How did the rumor get started? By popular social business network LinkedIn. The New York Times broke the story when they spotted a single phrase describing Lien’s current job role at Apple on Lien’s LinkedIn experience page this weekend: “Manage ARM (Nasdaq: ARMHY) Latest News about ARM CPU architecture team for iPhone.”

I constantly tell people that there is no line dividing the personal and business anymore, and to be prepared for anything you do online or offline at any time to be visible to other people. this just proves the point – when you work at a company built on and around keeping secrets and the element of surprise, posting your job description online is probably not the smartest thing to do.

The profile no longer shows on LinkedIn, meaning Lein is losing out on valuable networking because of a careless error in judgement. It’s a heavy price to pay for a moment of indiscretion, it seems, but he is heading up a division at Apple that could revolutionize the mobile industry. If the team can get the right ARM technology to work Apple will be able to beat the pants off the competition in terms of battery life and other metrics. this would be huge news for the company, which has been making gains in the mobile market since the iPhone was first introduced.
