MacBook Pro protoype rumors starting to circle the drain
Of all the rumors that pass across the internet regarding Macs, the ones I’m actually tracking have to do with the MacBook and MacBook Pro. This is purely for selfish reasons. I am in dire need of a new laptop to replace the much abused MacBook I currently have (a MacBook 1,1), and have been purposely holding off to see how pricing, features and design might change with a possible new line up.
The photos that circulated this past weekend were debunked as false, but that didn’t stop the speculation from running rampant and experts from weighing in on potential “real” design changes. One of many design features that was debunked was the pointy MacBook Air style knife-like edges. I’m glad – the current square edges work just fine for this frequent lap user.
As for other features, the cases are rumored to be aluminum, which I run hot and cold on for personal preference. I don’t like the stainless steel post-modern look of appliances and computers, so I’m hoping for at least a black model, if not a white one, to assuage the design woes of those of us who don’t want to own a cold space ship looking machine. I suppose anything is better than the beige computers from yesteryear, though.
What has geeks salivating is the multi-touch trackpad capabilities. I agree, that would be a useful feature, however, I have a hard time envisioning Apple finally creating a useful trackpad after years of having us create work-arounds for the single button mouse/trackpad issue. It would be almost like giving up after years of ignoring the desire for a more functional click tool. There are also rumors of a MacBook Air style keyboard. Having played with the MacBook Air courtesy of indulgent friends and business associates who have them and the local Apple Store, I can say I prefer the feel of the MacBook chiclet keyboard for my heavy typing use, though the relative quiet of the Air keyboard is nice.
Overall, this is another weekend of nothing more than rumor and speculation. I’m more than ready for the next generation of MacBooks and MacBook Pros to be revealed so that I can make an upgrade decision for my system. I usually tend to go with the last model of whatever is being discontinued, but this time I know in advance I won’t upgrade again for a while (yes, I know, I’ve said that before) so I want to invest wisely in the right Apple for my growing needs and intensive, keyboard cracking, hard drive straining use.

Yeah, I have been holding off the purchase also since catching glimpse of the rumors. Will you be deciding over Macbook and Macbook Pro options or also consider the Air? In the meantime keeping a close eye on the latest rumor developments

I think I need to move up to the MacBook Pro line for the intensive use my computer gets. I don’t like the Air – it’s missing too much to be useful to me.
