The economic slump vs Apple’s bottom line

By Leslie Poston

The entire world knows that there is a huge economic crisis going on in America. While the Senate and the House get busy spending the hard earned money of Americans to save a few fat cats and (theoretically) prop up the economy long enough for these average citizens to earn enough to start paying for this Misguided Master Plan™, there is only one question on the mind of the true Mac loyalist. That question is “But how will this crisis affect Apple?”

All tongue in cheek comments aside, there is a real concern in any retail based business right now about how the economic decisions being made in the House and Senate will affect the economy, the earnings, morale and spending habits of Americans, and a host of other variables. I am no economist, but my thought is that it will only have a minor impact on necessary products like computers and other goods we depend on to work and live.

I am positive that Apple will feel the pinch. We’re all going to feel the pinch. I’m also positive that if people and companies who own Apple stock can hang on to their towels and not panic things will take a turn for the better in the future. It tends to be panic that has the most immediate negative effect on stocks, and Apple’s users are a fickle bunch. Remember the downturn this past summer when Steve Jobs showed up at WWDC to do the keynote looking a bit unhealthy? It recovered from that minor set back and it will recover from this major one.

Pundits weighing on the issue agree, saying that the impact will be more on the number of people able to adopt Macs or upgrade their Macs in coming months. It will resemble a plateau much more than a dive, in other words. That’s a relief for those who may have been concerned their favorite technological fruit would rot right out of the economic tree.
