Strands wants to give you and a friend a Mac!
By Leslie Poston
If you haven’t heard of Strands, it is an application that is trying to compete against existing big names like FriendFeed in the life-streaming and aggregation sphere. I personally like the Strands interface much better than FriendFeed, but Strands suffers right now from FriendFeed’s popularity and early endorsement by technology evangelists like Robert Scoble and Louis Gray.
Strands allows you to import feeds from a wide variety of services. If you use Twitter, Pownce, Blogger, Jaiku, Last.fm, iLike, NetFlix, Pandora, Hype Machine, Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon, Amazon and more you can stream your activity on these services to your Strands account. This allows your friends, family and business contacts to see what you are up to in one place. Be careful, though! If you cross post using Ping.fm to both Twitter and Pownce, for example, just pick one to stream to reduce the duplicate noise.
It also allows you to see what others are up to, make and receive comments, and find new friends to follow (or to let follow you). Much like FriendFeed and Plaxo, it allows you a fully interactive life streaming experience. It just looks better doing it. Strands is a product of OpenStrands, makers of MoneyStrands, MusicStrands, PartyStrands and other tracking applications.
Why wax poetic about Strands when it has been trying, with only limited success, to usurp FriendFeed as the king of the stream for a few months already? Because the people behind it are bringing their “A” game now, with offers of Mac computers for yourself and a friend as well as other trinkets, if you can get people to try out Strands. If you don’t have Strands yet, comment. I have 12 invitations (first come, first served) so just indicate your interest below.
Full contest details:
Hi from the Strands Team!
Help us get in front of your non-geek friends! To make it fun and rewarding, we are giving away MacBook Airs, iPods Touches and Flip Cams… one for you and one for your non-geek friend. Here is why…
While we have a clear vision and roadmap for Strands.com, we are in private beta to build a service based on people’s feedback. Now we need feedback from a more mainstream part of the population: your mom, neighbors, co-workers… “non-geeks”. We have spoken with other startups and this seems to be common thought, thus we have started Operation mainSTREAM.
first part of Operation mainSTREAM is the contest “The Search for non-geeks”, which is picking up steam and whoever invites the most friends by November 1st wins.
Get involved; get your non-geek friends using the services you love; and win a cool gadget for you and them!

I think you’ll find my stamp of approval all over Strands as well.

Awesome
I forgot that post somehow. I just remember the love affair with FriendFeed when it first came out. I use it because my friends are there, but it is just so unattractive, even after the new design.

Requesting an invite. Strands isn’t blocked by my firewall, yet. Can’t wait to give it a try. Thanks!
