Apple cleans up in T3 awards

October 10, 2008

wikipediaFrom the MacBook Air to the iPod touch, Apple has earned top marks in four out of 11 categories, which is none too shabby, even given the high, high standards everyone has for the Cupertino, CA-base computer and widget maker.

T3, a UK operation which bills itself as the gadget website, has named names and published its Gadget Awards 2008 and here are the honors our favorite fruit company has earned in this year’s tally:

Gadget Candy Award—MacBook Air

A masterclass in notebook design. So covetable, you’d sell your mother or, indeed, your previous laptop to own it. We praise the day that Jonathan Ive picked up a pen and wrote the words “Very thin laptop” in the middle of a big sheet of graph paper.

Easy guys, however fine, it’s just a laptop. Maybe we should give T3 a sticky fingers copy award?

And, while we’re on the subject of lusty prose, check out T3’s over-the-top write up for the iPod touch 32GB, which they named both the Gadget of the Year and Best Music Gadget.

Fresh from a number one showing in our Hot 100, the Touch beats off all comers to be crowned 2008’s Gadget of the Year, thanks to sterling music features, plus web and email gubbins. Why, with much finer audio quality and twice the storage, not to mention no camera of dubious merit or inflated monthly fee, you could even say it’s better than the iPhone. In fact… you have.

So, an object lesson in copy editing for our British friends, eh? That is if you have aspirations of becoming an international publication, you might want to keep an American (perhaps “Yank” is a better word) on staff to avoid those embarrassing word uses.

And, didn’t we say Apple had won four awards? Yup, and the fourth and final winner is the iPhone, which has been named the Commuter Gadget of the Year. That’s an interesting choice because T3 is one of the few media outlets that groks Apple’s sophomore handset—it’s a computer with phone functionality added in and not the other way round…

    From your previous post:

“It will be interesting to see whether Steve unveils the fabelled $799 MacBook”

Looks like someone on your staff /does/ need a decent lesson in copy editing – or would that be you?

Time to look for a sub job on the Grauniad website ;)

On a different note, I’d say the iPhone, 3G version at least, feels like a fully featured phone with extras. A far cry from my Windows Mobile device that would hide a new call alert under the almighty Start menu – and not play an alarm sound when on silent ringer. Personally I reckon the iPhone 3G is a great phone (after 2.1 anyway) and as a 4hr-round-trip commuter, I think it deserves T3’s award.
