Apple ‘netbook’ spotted?
There’s a lot of space in between an iPhone and MacBook, and right now the possibility that Apple could be working on some “interesting ideas” to fill that void has people talking.
During Tuesday’s Q4 fiscal results conference call, Steve Jobs answered analyst questions, the first time he’s taken part in the call since 2000.
Naturally, wherever Mssr Jobs is, there’s news and Tuesday was no exception. Specifically, his replies to queries about Apple’s plans vis-a-vis the growing netbook phenomenon left much open to interpretation and begged more questions than he answered:
It’s that last point that really stirred imaginations and got tongues wagging. What will an Apple netbook look like? What will it and, just as importantly, won’t it do?
Another thing sure to fan flames burning in fan boy hearts is a report form New York Times stating that an anonymous websearch has sighted what it believes is an Apple netbook in the wild:
[A] search engine company shared with me on condition that I not reveal its name: The company spotted Web visits from an unannounced Apple product with a display somewhere between an iPhone and a MacBook. Is it the iPhone 3.0 or the NetMac 1.0?
Or, is it some cleaver bugger running OS X on his Asus EeePC, spoofing the servers? My money’s on the latter.
Yet the possibility that Apple really is working on a netbook, perhaps the son of the eMate (EveryMac, pictured above), it’s impossible to put the idea down.
With that seed planted, if you could be an angel on the shoulder of the product manager in charge of Apple’s netbook, what would you put inside? Intel Atom or Via Nano? WiMAX or 3G? You there be any ports?
The possibilities are endless…

It’s a difficult piece of the market for Apple. How do you put out a model with enough features to be popular while keeping it from cannibalizing sales of Macbooks or iPod touch?
With the 32gig Touch listing for $399, kinda tough.
“We don’t know how to make a $500 computer that’s not a piece of junk, and our DNA will not let us ship that.” LOL, classic Jobs.
Translation: We can’t sell a reliable $500 computer and maintain 30% margins and our DNA won’t allow us to do that.
