iPhone gets P2P with MewSeek
Breaking the mold of the Apple store, Cydia offers jail-broken iPhone users access to applications for their iPhone that may not meet Apple’s strict requirements for inclusion in its store. One of these applications is a new peer-to-peer (P2P) downloading app called MewSeek. MewSeek works on P2P SoulSeek.
MewSeek is not entirely new. It used to be called iSisk, but now it is resurrected as MewSeek for the iPhone and iPhone 3G. MewSeek works over all major mobile technologies (3G, EDGE, WiFi, etc). It allows users to find and download music to their iPhone quickly and painlessly.
MewSeek says not to use it for the nefarious purpose of stealing music. As MuxTape and other sites found out the hard way, just having a caveat in print on your site may not save you from the wrath of the RIAA, so users should download at their own risk, preferably sticking to legal songs. Then again, the app is only available on jail broken iPhones, so that might not stop some users from downloading whatever they’d like.
According to the developer and to Corvida over at Read, Write, Web, the application is still quite buggy. The developer mentioned having to go so far as to disable features temporarily until he could figure out a better way to code them in. Currently disabled are the downloads screen, WiFi continuous connect and others. If you want to try out MewSeek, you will need to download not only MewSeek, but also PwnPlayer. Both are available from Cydia.
