AdvantageousMP3: Music for less

November 6, 2008

Find the music you want using Apple’s beautifully complete, thoughtful UI and then slum on over to AmazonMP3 to seal the deal—truly the best of both worlds!

Apple owns the music download market because it’s the only company that delivers a single, beautifully intuitive solution. A big part of that slick delivery system is the iTunes Music Store, which has been the industry standard since it launched way, way back in April 2003.

In fact, it’s been such a hit that three of the four biggest music companies offer 256K, DRM-free versions of their songs through every music store except the iTunes Store. To date, Apple’s music store only offers 256K, DRM-free tracks from EMI, as well as a relative handful of independent labels. If that weren’t enough, these music stores also offer cheaper per track prices than iTunes with prices as low as 79-cents.

Still, whichever 256K, DRM-free, low-cost music service you choose—Amazon, Wal-Mart, Rhapsody, etc—it will be hobbled by a crap interface that’s as difficult to look at as it is to navigate. Aside from manually switching interfaces, what’s one to do?

Enter Advantageousmp3, an application connects the gooey-licious iTunes interface with AmazonMP3—the best of both worlds. Simply locate the song you want to buy in iTunes and then click “Get MP3 from Amazon” from the iTunes script menu and Advantageous will take you—most of the time—directly to the correct AmazonMP3 store page.

Yes, this is just a simple AppleScript, but it’s both easy to install and use. In fact, Advantageousmp3’s author, Robert Palmer, has wrapped it in slick, one-click installer. The only other thing you’ll need to do is the first you click it you’ll be prompted to activate the Graphic User Interface Scripting architecture of Mac OS X, which Advantageousmp3 will do for you.

After that? Do you browsing on the Internet’s best digital music store and do your shopping on one of the cheapest.

Cool, yes?
