Can’t wait for the ‘real’ iPhone nano?

December 26, 2008

Chinese cloners are already schlepping their own version of an Apple product that doesn’t exist yet – an interesting tidbit that gives new meaning to the phase, “if rumors were revenues.”

Hey, have you seen those engineering renderings of a protective case for the unicorn of the smart phone world? You know, the iPhone nano?

Of course, until Apple actually announces and ships a “smaller and less-capable version” of their world-beating handset, there is no such thing. Still, the people who make knock-offs of Apple products aren’t waiting for that formality to be fulfilled—they’ve already got iPhone nano clones available for “sale.”

Made-in-China is carrying an advertisement from Shenzhen Sentai Technology for the Mini Phone 3G. And, yes, that is white out covering the “i” ahead of the word “phone” in the image to the right—nothing says truth in advertising like white out.

Further, is that a block of pasted image in the upper center of the white model? What do you think they’re trying to cover up? I bet it’s a hardware feature that is still under NDA.

That said, as a former first-person participant in the Asian tech industry, I’d be greatly surprised if the pictured product is anything more than a hollow molding (ie Taiwanese and Chinese technology companies often create a half-baked molding and advertise it as finished goods in an effort to gauge demand, desired features and perhaps even raise a little development cash from the unwary).

Moreover this hallucinated handset also includes GPS, USB connectivity, Bluetooth (a feature that’s not functional in the real iPhone), 3.2-inch display (only a half-inch smaller than the current full-size iPhone 3G), T-Flash memory expansion card slot (up to 1GB), 130-million pixel “mp4″ camera and FM radio among other wonders.

Wow! Sounds great, doesn’t it? Ready to order? Have your credit card and payment details ready—operators are standing by…
