As of New Year’s Eve, it should be possible to illegally unlock your 3G iPhone without being a technical wizard, thanks to the independent iPhone Dev Team, definitely not affiliated with Apple. According to team member MuscleNerd, the hack is codenamed YellowSn0w.

Until yesterday, neither Apple nor any of its carrier partners have offered the iPhone for sale online. That’s now changed and with Wal-Mart set to start selling on Dec. 28, it’s not hard imagining that the iPhone’s distribution will one day rival that of the iPod.

Users of the iPhone and the iPod Touch have a curious relationship with WiFi: they adore it. New information from mobile advertising company AdMob indicates that users of handheld Apple devices are using a lot more WiFi since the 3G iPhones were released. In fact, when given the choice between using their cellular service or WiFi to access the Web, the users of iPhones are almost as likely to choose the WiFi as they are to use their cellular Web service.

The stars have been aligning for an earlier release of Apple’s next-gen operating system. Although it’s been billed as a rewrite of Leopard—heck the name’s just a riff—designed to reduce and refine the existing code, there are new and potentially earth shaking changes coming under the hood.

Nobody saw it coming, despite there being no shortage of Cupertino-watchers, but Apple today bought 8.2 million shares of Imagination Technologies, a leading mobile-on-chip system graphics developer. That is a 3.6 percent stake in the graphics company, worth approximately $4.9 million. The technologies produced by Imagination are already used in the iPhone and offer outstanding graphics and with very low power consumption.
