Apple unveiling iMovie update at January MacWorld?
Apple’s iMovie is a fantastic tool for all types of video creators, but its latest revamp was not only lack-luster, it actually seemed to be a step backwards in usability. However, that could all change, as a rumor floating around asserts that Apple will unveil a new and improved iMovie with a much greater scope at Macworld in January.
Ironically enough, PC World is spreading the word that the new iMovie might finally bring together the Apple vision in a big way: clouding. Steve Jobs hasn’t really managed to get MobileMe, Apple’s clouding personal service, quite right, mainly because it’s lame and lacks the ability to answer that important question of “so what?”
The new update to iMovie is supposed to include big feature improvements to allow users to access their video content from their iPhone, iTouch or computer wherever they are through MobileMe. It’s also supposedly going to be aimed at aiding users with YouTube uploads and content.
No doubt a very exciting prospect to PC users, there’s also word that iMovie might become a completely Web-based application, meaning PC users wanting that Apple quality could experience some of the magic that is iMovie from their PCs. That would tie in with many critics’ predictions that Apple will start taking some or all of its productivity suite online to combat Google’s own fleet of useful Web applications.
If you ask me, I believe that Apple’s latest iteration of iMovie lacks one very important facet: simplicity. Apple’s software has succeeded because it is largely easy to use and simple. iMovie isn’t. Though it can be mastered with a bit of work, iMovie right now just doesn’t have that Apple ease.
Though I’m thinking Apple has a lot more up its sleeve for Macworld than an iMovie update, the update would be more than welcome. Making the application Web-based could certainly assuage some of the ill will of Apple users who were dissatisfied with the latest iMovie offering.
