Make Mobile Safari more Safari like

January 2, 2009

Did you know there’s a free way to get copy-n-paste on your iPhone and iPod touch? Put back some of the features Apple took out with these handy (and free) bookmarks and bookmarklets. Kewl.

You know, it’s not exactly elegant, but PasteBud enables round-trip copy and paste on your iPhone or iPod Touch, between Mail and Safari:

1. From Mail, open the email that you’d like to copy

2. Forward it to your secret pastebud address

3. And, click the selection link in the instant reply from pastebud

4. Select as you would in a text editor (Tap and hold to start selection and release to end it)

5. Then, tap the compose button in the upper left to send the selection into a new email

Like I said, it’s not a stunningly elegant solution, but it does get the job in either direction and for the disbelieving there’s a demo (YouTube). To get going add PasteBud Copy and Paste bookmarks to the toolbar.

Hungry for more? Safari+ is a collection of “Bookmarklets,” which are little pieces of Javascript code that can be saved as ordinary bookmarks in your web browser. With them “installed” in your bookmarks, you can: find in page, find similar sites (google.com version), find similar sites (similicio.us version), display all images, list all links, scroll to end, translate to English (Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian), open links in new window, open links in same window and duplicate page.

Cool stuff.
