Take A Note a perfect fit for the iPhone

January 2, 2009

The iPhone is almost the ideal size for going with you to meetings, and to lunch, and to other business venues. Can it be used to take notes in these situations? If you have the Take A Note app the answer is a resounding yes.

Take A Note, by developer Igor Zhadanov, covers all the note-taking bases for those situations where a laptop is not really needed for other business purposes. The application covers not only standard written notes, but also audio and visual notes, including graphics, drawings, and photos. Take A Note is a free iPhone app, so cost is no barrier. And, according to a review by Ben Boychuk at Macworld.com, it does all of this with flair and style.

First, the basics. The application has a very clean easy-to-use interface. It is able to organize your notes by written, audio, or visual as well as by user-defined category. It is even an attractive application, using a brown and light yellow color scheme that reminds the user of taking notes in an Elizabethan library. It is missing a few features that the competition has, but also has a few features that they do not.

The audio note capabilities of Take A Note really stand out from the pack. Using the iPhone’s built-in microphone, the app will save up to 100 minutes of audio. It handles noise reduction in software, giving a clean sound to recordings in almost all environments. It is very easy to use, with pause, reverse and fast forward features operated by a simple tap, and audio scrolling via slider dragging.

This is also an iPhone app that plays nicely with others. It allows you to easily exchange notes and other information via WiFi, so you can easily back up your notes to your MacBook. The WiFi connection works both ways, of course, so that you can also move information the other way, moving necessary information from your notebook to the iPhone.

Since Take A Note is a free iPhone application, it won’t cost you a thing to try it out. With its long features list, clean interface, and excellent audio note functionality, this is an iPhone app that might allow you to leave your laptop and your tape recorder behind, heading into meetings with a much lighter load.

In the iPhone App Store, Take a Note is available for $4.99, as of 1/14/08. Is it free someplace else?
