App Store delivering 4.8m downloads a day
Over a half-billion apps downloaded since July 11 launch. The last time Apple mentioned a milestone, back on Dec. 6 of last year, the company was celebrating the availability of the 10,000th application, as well as 2.3-million daily and over 300-million total downloads.
Quoting full page newspaper advertisements run by Apple to announce the milestone, Alley Insider reports that iTunes App Store customers have downloaded more than 500 million applications—a daily rate of 4.8 million.
So, in the 40 odd days since Dec. 6, Apple has seen the number of daily downloads more than double and the absolute number of downloads rise more than 66 percent. Of course, with millions of new iPhone and iPod touch users downloading over the holidays and the economy worsening by the day, it is perhaps unlikely that Apple will be able to maintain that rate.

Still, it bears remembering that it took Apple 61 days to reach the 100 million app milestone. So, it would seem pretty obvious that App Store sales are still accelerating in addition to any temporary holiday.
Another factor that bodes well for the long term health of App Stores is the rise of the iPod touch, which doubled its share of web traffic generated by users.

Nevertheless, whatever praise can be applied to the iPhone for its genius, double that should heaped on the App Store—tens of millions in new revenue and a revolutionary new software ecosystem that Apple’s competitors can only talk about duplicating.
That is, until Apple rolled out its iPhone – App Store, one-two punch, no one understood how to deliver a compelling online experience that is extensible…
