How to move your tunes from iPod to iPod

January 19, 2009

If you are an iPod owner, you know that many things can happen to make you need to move your music from one iPod to another. You could get a new model of iPod and no longer have your old computer. You could get a second iPod to keep in the car. You could get your kids an iPod. Whatever the reason, the need to move files from one to the other comes up now and then. So how do you do it?

There are several ways to accomplish this, none of them too simple. Perhaps the easiest, according to one source, is to use an application called iPod2iPod. I’ve never used that application, but according to that recommendation , this simple download will enable you to make a copy of our music to share with a friend while iTunes is closed. Just create a playlist and fill it with songs you want to transfer, then use the app to do it. It sounds easy as pie.

Some other software based options exist, like MiShare and Hitch. And you can use iTunes to import songs from one user’s iPod to another. However, this involves replacing all of the existing user’s songs with the songs being imported. This is hardly ideal, as the point is to share and increase a collection, not eradicate it. It also defeats the purpose of direct iPod to iPod convenience.

Barring success with third party applications you can also try making your iPod a storage drive and fooling the second ipod into thinking of it as just another hard drive, hoping not to erase existing music on the iPod receiving the files. This is risky, but can be attempted by going into your iTunes Settings menu and enabling disk use and manual file transfer options. Depending on your iPod and the receiving iPod, you may then be able to do your transfer.

I think the easiest thing to do is to use the third party software option of your choice. It’s a bit less hassle than trying to coerce your hardware into doing your bidding on your own. If you have software you like not listed, let us know in the comments. I’m also interested in other methods besides making your iPod a disk drive.

why not go away, review ALL the software you mention, and come back when u have an article to write. not just guess about how good or easy some software might be. leave the article to the last minute or something?

I have to agree with randyglandy. You have done a very poor job with this article. I must add the ridiculousness of linking only one software from your list and forgetting the others. To add, your one link does not even go to the software’s website, but just another article that actually does a better job than you on answering how one performs this iPod song transfer. This is at least the second article from this website in recent times that says nothing. This website is starting to waste my time. I may move on if it continues.
