Mac software: Toyota iQ brings ‘safety’ to your laptop

January 21, 2009

For anyone who still thinks the rest of us are just like everyone else, think differently. Toyota’s rolling out a new car in Europe, Holland to be specific, and they are marketing it online with the aid of a video and laptop screen saver application. Windows people? They are just not in the (marketing demographic) picture.

There was a time in the ’90s when MDMA was everywhere and Microsoft was cool. Things were so bad that it was actually socially unacceptable to use a Mac (makes my skin crawl just thinking about it).

That was just so 1998.

Things are definitely much, much better now. No clearer evidence of the Macintosh’s renaissance of cool is needed than this bit o’ viral marketing (Dutch, English version) that is targeted quite specifically at young, well educated, environmentally aware folks that do not lack for money. In other words, Mac users.

The Toyota iQ is the safest car in its category. The iQ Safety Screensaver makes your laptop as safe as the Toyota iQ. Here is how it works…

As you might have guessed (ie check out the Apple Remote), the software demonstrated above is only for the Mac (OS X 10.4 and higher). Makes your laptop as safe as the Toyota iQ? Hmm, I guess the Japanese car giant only has one group of computer users in mind—the rest of us.

I suspect Toyota would be happy to take a Windows user’s money, though it seems pretty obvious that they are not out there looking for it…

What’s your take?

This is exactly why taking the tool you use and making it a part of your self image is so ridiculous. And annoying.

  2. Mongo:

Me thinks he doth protest too much.

Let yourself feel the love Kenny.

  3. Ken:

Ummmm no. But if you have developed calluses around that hook in your mouth and no longer have the capability to feel it being jerked, I suppose you might mistake it as normal.

    Nice butcher of Hamlet.

“When we smugly declare that “the lady doth protest too much,” we almost always mean that the lady objects so much as to lose credibility. Gertrude says that Player Queen affirms so much as to lose credibility. Her vows are too elaborate, too artful, too insistent. More cynically, the queen may also imply that such vows are silly in the first place, and thus may indirectly defend her own remarriage.”

Notice the use of smug. Ahh irony.

  4. Mongo:

Gee, Ken, the irony of a long-winded response from a person defending himself from the charge of long-winded responses.

You said it before, you’re in the same, but a different pew.

Get over yourself, unclench and feel the love.
